Tungareshwar waterfalls, temple, national park and trekking routes near Vasai is a group of popular tourist spots. One can reach here within 1 hour from Mumbai, Thane & Navi-Mumbai suburbs!
Best Time To Visit: June to February is the ideal time to visit this spot. You can see spectacular lush greenery, splashing waterfalls and pleasant atmosphere in this period!
Location Address: Tungareshwar mountain, 3 km from Sativali Village Near Vasai Phata, Thane district, Maharashtra.
Time Required: This spot offers an easy one-day picnic from Mumbai. However, you will have to prioritize the option between temple, waterfalls, and trekking!

Tungareshwar Temple Information:

The beautiful mountain of Tungareshwar is located at an elevation of about 2177 feet between Virar & Vasai region of Maharashtra. It is among the highest mountain peaks in Vasai. It has dense forest & offers opportunities to explore this area to nature lovers, trekkers, and mountaineers. The temple of Lord Shiva at the top of this mountain attracts a large number of tourists. This spot offers comfortable 1-day picnic from Mumbai.


                                  

Tungareshwar National Park:

This region has been declared as a wildlife sanctuary & plays as an effective corridor and buffer for the fauna of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. This region has a lush green forest, waterfalls, calm & cool environment, beautiful streams, and valleys. The sweet sound of birds chirping gives you a serene & peaceful experience. There are a large number of medicinal plants and herbs exist in Tungareshwar National Park. It is among the good wildlife sanctuaries in Maharashtra.
Animals like Leopard, jackal, sambar, rusty-spotted cat, common mongoose, barking deer, common palm civet, fox, common langur, black-naped hare can be spotted in Tungareshwar Wildlife Sanctuary. Different birds of over 150 species like crested serpent eagle, common kestrel, peregrine falcon, grey jungle fowl, hornbill and many others live in this forest. There is a Strict prohibition on animal hunting in the Forest. Forest officials check bags of tourists at the check post. There is a strict provision on taking alcohol or weapons inside the sanctuary.


                                           

Tungareshwar Waterfalls & Trekking Route:

Waterfalls and trekking are also popular attractions over here. A lot of waterfalls originates on this mountain in the monsoon season. Apart from 2 main Tungareshwar waterfalls, there are various small and medium sized waterfalls as well. Be cautious while enjoying in these waterfalls as a lot of big stones and boulders are present over here. In the act of excitement or slipperiness of rock, you may fall down and injure yourself.
This place also has good trekking trails as good as other trekking trails in Maharashtra. Highway junction is the starting point of the trek which is 1 Km from the base. There is a forest check post at the base. From this post, you will have to do 3 km hike and walking through two streams. After that, you will reach the Lord Shiva temple. 

Tungareshwar: How To Reach

  • By Car Drive: Proceed towards Vasai town on the National Highway-8. It is about 54 km from Mumbai city. Then take a right turn from the highway from Sativali Village near Vasai phata. This right turn goes from the downside of a flyover. The distance between Vasai and Tungareshwar is just 12 km. You can take a car till the Shiva temple on the mountain top.
  • Nearest Railway Station: Vasai Road Station on Western Railway is the nearest railhead to reach this beautiful spot. Regular trains ply to this station throughout the day. This station is about 1 hour away from the Andheri. After reaching the station, on the east side, you can catch private vehicles like Auto-rickshaw and jeeps to reach here. Share auto walla’s take fare of 35 per person.
  • Nearest Airport: Mumbai Airport is the closest air station to Tungareshwar. The airport is 54 km away from this spot.
Eating Stuff / Restaurants: There are some small restaurants near the Shiva temple to buy snacks & cold drinks. However, it is advisable to carry sufficient water and food for the day.
Staying Options / Accommodation: You can stay at temple’s own Dharamshala which has 7-8 rooms. Rooms are available for devotees at a reasonable price. They charge you only Rs.100 per room for an overnight stay. These are simple rooms so please do not keep many expectations like normal hotel amenities. However, they provide cooking utensils & kitchen area. So you can cook your own food!
